JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Western def. Black Hills State, 2-0
Records: Western 3-10-2 overall (3-6-0 RMAC), BHSU 3-10-2 (1-7-2)
Location: Black Hills Power Sports Complex, Spearfish, S.D.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It seemed as if a goal was destined in early second-half action as Western controlled possession and began to pepper the Black Hills State frame. Three Mountaineer shots in a quick 90-second span hinted at Lyman's soon-to-be first career goal.
- Its second corner kick opportunity in the early going of that second period proved to be the game-winning play for the Mountaineers. The loft into the box in the 61st minute eventually found Lyman who knocked home the game-winner off an assist from Caileen Sienknecht.
- Western was clinging to its narrow advantage late in the game when Black Hills State's attack produced a dangerous scoring opportunity only to be thwarted with a save on the shot by Mountaineer goalkeeper Aubree Orosco.
- Western sent a long ball deep into Yellow Jackets territory where the home team eventually turned over possession near midfield in the final minute of play. Luci Gulbransen gained control and pushed forward then dished a pass to her left where Lyman dribbled past a pair of BHSU defenders and iced the game with her second goal.
TURF NOTES
- The Mountaineers' second-half success was a turn from the opening 45 minutes during which neither team was able to gain an advantage over the other. The halftime break saw the teams even in shots (4-4) with Western getting two on goal and BHSU getting one on frame, all three easily saved by the respective goalies to send the combatants into the break knotted in a scoreless tie.
- Momentum changed almost from the outset of the second half, though, and Western would rack up an 11-4 shots advantage.
- Lyman and Gulbransen provided much of the pressure for Western, Gulbransen closing the contest with five shots, two on goal, and Lyman getting three of her four shots on frame with two finding the back of the Yellow Jackets' net.
- Orosco would earn the win with three saves while her BHSU counterpart, Morgan Wood, would take the loss despite coming up with five saves.
- Sunday's victory comes on the heels of Western's 3-2 upset victory Friday afternoon over host Regis University, which had entered the match tied for second in the league standings.
