Sienknecht Header Sinks Regis

DENVER  Western Colorado women's soccer rallied from a one-goal second-half deficit, getting the game-winner in the 87th minute off a header from Caileen Sienknecht for a 3-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference upset over host Regis University Friday afternoon.

The victory was the first in program history over the Rangers.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Western def. Regis, 3-2
Records: Western 2-10-2 overall (2-6 RMAC), Regis 10-4-1 (6-2-1)
Location: Regis Turf Fields, Denver, Colo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Regis scored a pair of goals six minutes apart in the second half to wrest away the lead that the Mountaineers' Jordan Welsh had given them in the 14th minute with her first collegiate goal.
  • The Rangers had been swinging away since that deficit – finishing with 27 shots – and finally put in the tying goal in the 54th then moved in front for the first time six minutes later.
  • An aggressive push into its left side of the box by Kylie Hickox in the 78th resulted in a Regis handball on her shot. Laura Pelino was able to put in the equalizer on the ensuing penalty kick, depositing her first goal of the season into the right side to pull Western even.
  • Consecutive corner kicks in the early seconds of the 87th set up the game-winner. Luci Gulbransen's first set piece opportunity from the right corner was bodied past the end line by a Ranger defender to grant another chance from the same corner.
  • This one was a perfect loft right around the top of the goal box where Sienknecht was able to get to it first, heading the game-winner just inside the right post.
  • The Rangers pushed everyone up in the final minute of action, the added pressure finally getting off one final shot on goal, a rocket with 19 seconds remaining that goalkeeper Aubree Orosco easily handled to preserve the win and knock the Rangers from a second-place tie in the RMAC standings.
TURF NOTES
  • Welsh's goal came off a hard shot from the top of the half-circle that beat the Regis goalie just inside the right post. The play was set up by a turnover in the midfield and a nice pass to Welsh from Pelino. The goal was the first Western shot of the game.
  • Orosco earned the win by making eight saves, four in each half.
  • Western was outshot 27-6 overall, and by a shots on goal margin of 10-4, but Orosco's efforts between the pipes kept the Mountaineers in the game, providing Pelino then Sienknecht the opportunities to pull off the upset.
  • The offensive output Friday was a welcome sight, as Western had not scored a goal in its past four games.
  • Regis had won all 10 meetings with the Mountaineers prior to Friday's victory.
