Mountain Lions Sweep Mountaineers

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  Mountaineer volleyball was unable to overcome mid-set scoring stretches by host University of Colorado Colorado Springs Friday night in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match, falling in straight sets to the Mountain Lions.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: UCCS def. Western, 3-0 (25-17, 25-13, 25-21)
Records: Western 4-15 overall (2-7 RMAC), UCCS 6-12 (4-4)
Location: Gallogly Events Center, Colorado Springs, Colo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It would be near the same point in each set that UCCS would break free from Western with identical 5-0 runs.
  • In the opening set, the Mountaineers closed to within three at 13-10 when UCCS would initiate what would be a deciding – and repeated – 5-0 run. The Mountain Lions would maintain the eight-point advantage to the end of the set.
  • In the second set, a block by Kennedy Kelly and Kerri Carsrud would draw Western to within two points, 12-10, before another 5-0 UCCS run would spoil the momentum the block had lit. The Mountain Lions would go on to take a 2-0 advantage in the match with a 12 point second set victory.
  • Western battled back from a 4-0 deficit that started the third set, clawing to within three points at 17-14 before the final 5-0 dagger by the Mountain Lions.
  • The Mountaineers didn't go easily in that third and deciding set, though, fighting off not one, not two, not three, but four match points before UCCS would escape the third with a 25-21 win.
NET NOTES
  • Seyun Park had another strong night on the attack for Western, registering a match-high 12 kills and posting an attack percentage of .400, the ninth time she's reached double-digits in kills and the sixth time she's hit .400 or better in a match this season.
  • Kelly finished with a pair of block assists to go along with four kills on the night.
  • The Mountaineers actually registered seven more attacks than did the Mountain Lions, 93-86, but Western posted only a .108 success rate on those attacks compared to UCCS' .337 attack mark.
NEXT UP
The Mountaineers have little time to regroup as they continue the weekend RMAC road trip with a Saturday visit to 12th-ranked Regis University in a 3 p.m. match in Denver.
