Mountaineers nearly pull off comeback, tie against Dominguez Hills

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.  Western Colorado battled the 100-degree weather and California State University, Dominguez Hills on Friday (Sep. 2) and nearly pulled off a comeback after trailing 0-1 at the half. However, the Toros were able to toughen up after giving up the tying goal – leading to the game ending in a 1-1 tie.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Toros nearly scored at the 7:53 mark of the game. But, Bridget Feely blocked the shot attempt with her foot – keeping the tied up at 0-0.
  • Towards the end of the first half – 31:29 mark to be exact – Dominguez Hills scored the first goal of the game, by getting past the Mountaineers defense and tapping the ball into the back of the net, giving them a 1-0 lead.
  • The Mountaineers offense got going in the second half – recording six shots, four being on goal. With the most important shot of the game happening after the Mountaineers were able to earn a corner kick.
  • It appeared Kylee Smith might tie the game at the 76:44 mark of the game. Yet, it was knocked out of play by the Toros goalkeeper setting up a corner kick that the Mountaineers would capitalize on.
  • Smith delivered a beautiful pass to Sarah Connolly, who put the ball into the top center of the goal – tying the game at one goal apiece.  
PITCH NOTES
  • Alex Peralta was solid in the goal, recording five saves over the course of the game.
  • Western Colorado defense was impressive in the second half, only allowing the Toros to get three shots off. In total Dominguez Hills had 15 shots in the game – 12 came in the first half – with six of those shots being on goal.
  • In the second half, the Mountaineers had six corner kicks. While Dominguez Hills didn't record any all game.
