GUNNISON, Colo. Western Colorado got one step closer to making the Rocky Mountain Athletic tournament on Thursday, Feb. 24 by defeating Colorado Mesa University 69-50 in Paul Wright Gymnasium in front of a rowdy fan base.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Mountaineers got off to a hot start early on in the first quarter, thanks to four-points from Emmery Wagstaff and Katie Dalton and a basket from Ky Buell – resulting in Western taking a 10-2 lead with 6:22 left to go in the quarter. The Mountaineers went on to shoot 75 percent from the field, leading to them holding a 24-11 lead heading into the second quarter.
- Things were pretty even in the second quarter, both teams scoring 13-points apiece. While Colorado Mesa trimmed the lead to 11-points with 1:08 left to go before halftime, Dalton made a lay-up 20 seconds later to give Western a 37-24 lead at halftime.
- In the third quarter the Mountaineers lead ballooned to 20-points. However, nearly four-minutes later the Mavericks offense got going and managed to trim the lead to 46-38. Western fought back and increased the lead to 15-points after, Anda Kuzmina and Dalton both scored two-points. But, Colorado Mesa scored the final basket of the quarter putting the Mountaineers lead back at 13-points.
- Western was in control the entire fourth quarter, outscoring the Mavericks 16-10, as they went on to pull of the upset and get a much-needed win.
COURT NOTES
- Dalton led the way for the Mountaineers scoring 12-points, followed by Wagstaff with 11-points and Samantha Coleman with 10-points. Courtney Humbarger led the way on the glass grabbing seven rebounds.
- Western shot 43.8-percent (21-48) from the field, 35.3-percent (6-17) from three and 91.3-percent (21-23) from the free throw line.
- Kelsey Siemons led the way for Colorado Mesa recording 13-points, while Daniella Turner pitched in with 11-points of her own.
- The Mavericks had a rough night shooting the basketball, making 30-percent (18-60) from the field, 30.4-percent from three and 58.3-percent (7-12) from the free throw line.

Western will be back in action on Saturday, taking on Westminster at home at 5 p.m.
