Orediggers capitalize on Mountaineers turnovers

GOLDEN, Colo. Western Colorado had a three-point lead heading into halftime. However, a slow start to the third quarter allowed Colorado School of Mines to create separation and walk away with a 65-50 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Emmery Wagstaff couldn't miss from long range to start the game, going four-for-four from three helping the Mountaineers take a 14-12 lead after the first quarter. Katie Dalton scored the other two-points in the first quarter on a lay-up.
  • Western offense continued to fire on all cylinders in the second quarter, outscoring the Orediggers 13-12. Leading to them having a 27-24 lead at halftime. Dalton got going late in the quarter scoring the final six-points for the Mountaineers before halftime.
  • Colorado School of Mines offense caught fire in the third quarter scoring 23-points, while Western was only able to score seven-points in the quarter, resulting in the Orediggers taking a commanding 47-34 lead.
  • The Mountaineers had their best scoring output in the fourth quarter, dropping 16-points – led by Natalie Jojola and Rachel Cockman who scored five and four-points. Despite having their best quarter in the fourth, Colorado School of Mines outscored Western 18-16, resulting in the Mountaineers losing 65-50.
  • Turnovers derailed Western as the 25 turnovers led to 23-points for the Orediggers.
COURT NOTE
  • Wagstaff led the way for the Mountaineers on offense scoring 12-pointsand grabbed seven rebounds in the game. The next highest scorers were Samantha Coleman and Dalton who each had nine-points apiece.
  • Western shot 37.8 percent (14-37) from the field, 28.6 percent (6-21) from three and 66.7 percent (16-24) from the free throw line.
  • Courtney Stanton was the leading scorer for Colorado School of Mines, scoring 16-points. Ashley Steffeck was also a factor on offense pitching in with 13-points and a team high six rebounds.
  • The Orediggers made 41.8 percent (23-55) from the field, 21.4 percent (3-14) from three and 88.9 percent (16-18) from the free throw line.
