Mountaineers lose in final seconds

GUNNISON, Colo. With 15 seconds left in the game down 63-65, Emmery Wagstaff came down the court an knocked down a three-pointer to give the Mountaineers a 66-65 lead – needing a stop on the defensive end to win the game. Unfortunately, with two seconds left the Rangers made a lay-up that led to them winning 67-66.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was anyone's game early on, the lead never growing bigger than two-points for the majority of the first quarter. But, right before the first quarter ended Anda Kuzmina made a jumper with 1:01 left to give Western a 13-10 lead.
  • The Mountaineers lead grew to eight-points (21-13) in the second quarter after a Ky Buell jumper. However, Regis offense caught fire and erased the lead minutes later, then lost the lead after Natalie Jojola made a jumper in the paint. Before the quarter came to a close, the Rangers retook the lead an went into halftime up 33-31.
  • Western trailed for the majority of the third quarter – Regis holding a six-point lead with 3:12 left to go – but, the Mountaineers battled and managed to retake the lead with 48 seconds left in the quarter on a Katie Dalton lay-up.
  • Dalton helped Western extend the lead to three-points early on in the fourth quarter making another lay-up. But, the Rangers took the lead back two-minutes later and held onto to it until Emmery Wagstaff drained a three-pointer with 15 seconds left to go, giving the Mountaineers a one-point lead.  
  • Regis knocked down the game winner 13 seconds later to walk away with the victory.
COURT NOTES
  • Wagstaff had another solid night for Western, scoring 17-points, while grabbing nine rebounds. Rachel Cockman had a career best 14-points on 60 percent shooting from the field.
  • Buell and Courtney Humbarger were also grabbing boards left and right, each grabbing seven rebounds apiece.
  • The Mountaineers shot 44.6 percent (25-56) from the field, 31.6 percent (6-19) from three and 58.8 percent (10-17) from the free throw line.
  • Morgan L. Smith led the way for Regis scoring 21-points and had help from Sam Deem who scored 16-points of her own.
  • The Rangers made 42.6 percent (26-61) from the field, 36.4 percent (8-22) from three and 63.6 percent (7-11) from the free throw line.

Western will travel to Golden, Colo., tomorrow (Feb. 12) for a tough match-up against No. 17 Colorado School of Mines at 5 p.m.
