HOW IT HAPPENED
- Grace Kirscher came out ready to go scoring the first seven-points for Western. After Courtney Humbarger knocked down a three to give the Mountaineers a two-point lead (10-8), Kirscher knocked down a three of her own to extend the lead to 13-8.
- With a 16-10 lead to start the second quarter, Katie Dalton extended the lead to 20-12, knocking down a jumper and a lay-up to start the quarter. Kirscher scored her 13th-point of the game with 7:21 left in the quarter, knocking down her second three-pointer of the game.
- The Cougars chipped at the away the lead. However, Western went into halftime with a 35-30 lead.
- Colorado Christian offense got going coming out of halftime, tying the game at 39-points apiece at the 5:07 mark in the quarter. But, Natalie Jojola made an acrobatic lay-up a few seconds later, then Emmery Wagstaff drained a three-pointer with 4:04 left as the Mountaineers took a 44-39 lead.
- Jojola helped the Mountaineers have a 10-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, sinking two free-throws with one second left in the third quarter. Despite losing Kirscher in the second quarter, Western was able to defeat the Cougars 80-72, in large part due to Wagstaff who went off in the second half scoring 18-points.
COURT NOTES
- Wagstaff was the leading scorer in the game with 18-points, followed by Jojola with 14-points and Kirscher who scored 13-points. Wagstaff did a little bit of everything in the game grabbing five rebounds and recording two-steals. Kirscher also had two steals and Rachael Cockman grabbed five boards of her own.
- The Mountaineers shot 50 percent (24-48) from the field, 52.9 percent (9-17) from three and 76.7 percent (23-30) from the free throw line.
- Colorado Christian was led by Anges Paul who had 17-points, nine rebounds and one steal. Sophia Karasinski, Christen Curry and Lourdes Gonzalez also were a factor on offense scoring 12, 11 and 11-points.
- The Cougars shot 43.4 percent (26-60) from the field, 25 percent (3-12) from three and 60.7 percent (17-28) from the free throw line.Â
