Mountain Lions steal a win from the Mountaineers

GUNNISON, Colo. Western Colorado was up by five-points heading into the fourth quarter. However, a strong offensive performance by University of Colorado at Colorado Springs led to them defeating the Mountaineers 60-57.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was anyone's game early on, as both teams traded buckets for the first five minutes of the ball game. Then the game started to tip in the favor of UCCS who went on a 6-2 run for the next four minutes, resulting in them having a 13-7 lead with 1:10 left to go in the first quarter.
  • The Mountaineers offense came alive in the second quarter – outscoring the Mountain Lions 18-11 – thanks to Katie Dalton who scored eight-points in the quarter. With 35 seconds left to go before halftime, Natalie Jojola knocked down a corner three, giving Western a 27-26 lead heading into halftime.
  • In the third quarter UCCS came within one-point of tying the game four times. Yet, the Mountaineers continued to battle and got contributions from Brooklyn Seymour who knocked two free throws and Emmery Wagstaff who drained a three with 37 seconds left – giving Western a five-point lead heading into the final quarter.
  • The five-point lead got increased to six-points – after the Mountain Lions drained a three at the 8:35 mark to cut the lead to three-points – on Ky Buell three-pointer.
  • From there UCCS erased the lead quickly, tying the game at 51-points apiece with 4:57 left to play. 23 seconds later the Mountain Lions took the lead and never looked back escaping with a three-point victory.
COURT NOTES
  • Dalton tied her career high, scoring 22-points on 80 percent shooting an also grabbed seven rebounds in the game.
  • Jojola was the next highest scorer scoring 10-points, followed by Seymour with nine-points.
  • For UCCS, they were led by Maison White who scored 15-points and grabbed seven rebounds of her own.
  • Jasmine Jeffcoat also had an impact scoring 10-points, while Ellie Moore scored nine-points.
