HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It appeared the Mountaineers were going to be forced to punt on their first drive of the game. However, a successful fake punt by Cole Riters on fourth and one, extended the drive and gave Western the momentum to score their first touchdown of the game.
  • Josh Cummings helped get the Mountaineers close to the red zone breaking an 18-yard run – putting Western on Fort Lewis 30-yard line - then Connor Desch connected with Deyvon Butler on a swing pass Butler took all the way to the six-yard line. Three plays later Desch found Damian Macias in the corner of the endzone for the touchdown.
  • On the Mountaineers next drive Cummings broke a 31-yard run, that set up the Western to score – ball on the 18-yard line – in the beginning of the second quarter. On the next play, Desch connected with Riters on a fade route for 17 yards (ball on the one) and then Butler capped the drive off with a one-yard touchdown.
  • Following a failed fourth down conversion by the Skyhawks, Cummings had two rushes for 20 yards, the second rush resulting in Cummings finding the endzone for the touchdown.
  • The Mountaineers lead grew to 28-0, after Desch connected with Malik White for a 30-yard passing touchdown. Cummings had another long, 17-yard rush that put the ball on Fort Lewis 30-yard line.
  • With five minutes left before halftime, the Skyhawks scored their first touchdown of the game on a 20-yard touchdown pass. Western responded on their very next drive as Desch connected again with White for a 52-yard passing touchdown.
  • The Mountaineers scored once again before halftime, putting together a seven-play drive that ended with Alec Fonseca making a 25-yard field goal with five seconds left on the clock - sending Western into halftime with a 38-7 lead.
  • Coming out of halftime, Western made a huge play on special teams thanks to Darrious Gaines who blocked the punt and was then recovered by Kyle Gaster for a 37-yard touchdown.
  • Fort Lewis cut into the lead on Western's first drive of the third quarter, by recovering a fumble for a 35-yard touchdown.
  • The Mountaineers added three more points to their lead (48-14) with 1:49 left in the third quarter on a Fonseca 19-yard field goal. Before the third quarter ended, Luke Nethercot completed a 38-yard pass to Riters – which set up Braeden Hogan to score on the next play on a 29-yard rushing touchdown.
