Wagstaff’s 22-points not enough

PORTALES, N.M. Western Colorado was down by two-points with 7:14 left in the fourth quarter. However, was unable to take the lead, leading to them losing to Eastern N.M. 51-37.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Greyhounds sprinted out of the starting box to start the game, going on a 11-2 run over the course of three-minutes and 58-seconds. Emmery Wagstaff briefly slowed down the run hitting a three-pointer. However, Eastern N.M. continued to scorer making the next seven-points, then Wagstaff once again hit another three-pointer putting the score at 18-8 (3:47) in favor of the Greyhounds.
  • A minute later, Wagstaff hit her third straight and unknowingly at the time the final basket the Mountaineers would score in the quarter, leading to Eastern N.M. having a 22-11 lead going into the second quarter.
  • In the second quarter, things calmed down significantly for both teams on offense. Similar to the previous quarter, the Greyhounds offense got going early scoring the first five-points of the quarter. But, Rachel Cockman made sure they wouldn't score seven straight knocking down a bucket in the paint.
  • After two made free throws by Eastern N.M., Cockman made a layup as the score read 29-14. Before the quarter ended, Wagstaff made two free throws. At halftime Western trailed 17-29.
  • Coming out of halftime, the Mountaineers had their best quarter of the game, while the Greyhounds had their worse.
  • Eastern N.M. scored all of six-points in the quarter within the first four minutes, as they started the quarter on a 6-2 run. From there it was all about Western's offense. The Mountaineers went on a 12-0 run for the remainder of the quarter, Wagstaff knocking down three three-points and Mia Lozoya making a three-pointer of her own.
  • Heading into the fourth quarter down 35-31, Western's offense was unable to get anything going. With 7:48 on the clock, Wagstaff got the Mountaineers within two-points of tying the game on a jumper. Then both teams exchanged points, Cockman making a layup to keep Western down by two-points.
  • Following that basket by Cockman, the Mountaineers got ice cold on offense, resulting in Eastern N.M., closing the game out on a 14-2 run that last six-minutes and 42-seconds.
COURT NOTES
  • Wagstaff finished the game with 22-points (7-of-24) and also had six rebounds. Cockman had the second most points pitching in with eight-points, eight rebounds, four blocks and two steals.
  • As a whole Western shot; 25.9 percent (14-54) from the field, 25 percent (7-of-28) from three and 22.2 percent (2-of-9) from the free throw line.
  • Deja Adrian was the leading scorer for Eastern N.M., dropping 16-points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
  • As a whole the Greyhounds shot, 30.4 percent (17-of-56) from the field, 28 percent (7-of-25) from three and 58.8 percent (10-of17) from the free throw line.
