Mountaineers shutout Cougars

GUNNISON, Colo. Western Colorado earned their fifth win of the season and tied their win total from last season, today (Oct. 2) defeating Colorado Christion 1-0. With the win the Mountaineers currently are in fourth place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Mountaineers got things going early offensively, scoring 9:41 into the first half, thanks to Reece Mercer who delivered a spectacular cross to Laura Pelino who tapped the ball past the Cougars goal keeper for, unknowingly at the time the game winning goal.
  • From there Western Colorado played stellar defense allowing Colorado Christian to take eight shots in the first half with only two being on goal.
  • In the second half, the Mountaineers defense got even better as the Cougars had three shots, only two managing to find the goal.
PITCH NOTES
  • Pelino led the team in shots with four, one being on goal. While Taylor Bottoms had three shots in the game. In total Western had 13 shots in the game with three being on goal.
  • For Colorado Christian, they had 11 shots in the game, four being on goal.
  • Defensively, Ellie Kubena, Karly Morkunas, Bridget Feely and Malia Yang played all 90-minutes. Aubree Orosco recorded her third shutout of the season – second of the weekend – recording four saves over the course of the game.
