Mountaineers fall to Mavericks on the road

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Western Colorado had a tough night shooting the basketball as they fell 63-39 to Colorado Mesa University.

Final Score: Colorado Mesa def. Western Colorado 63-39.
Records: Western Colorado 8-9, Colorado Mesa 14-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After trailing 13-4 to start the second quarter, the Mountaineers offense pick up drastically scoring 19-points thanks to the bench who played a big part in Western scoring output - contributing for 12 of the 19-points.
  • Ky Buell knocked down two three-pointers, Rachel Cockman made two jumpers and converted the and-one free throw, while Brooklyn Seymour made one free throw.
  • The Mountaineers offense slowed down from there, scoring eight-points coming out of halftime.
  • Grace Kirscher made a three-pointer 9:05 into the quarter, then Natalie Jojola sunk two free throws minutes later, with the final basket coming from Kirscher who knocked down her second three-pointer in the quarter.
  • Similar to the third quarter, Western was only able to score eight-points once again. Getting contributions from, Anda Kuzmina who made a jumper 30 seconds into the quarter, Jojola making back-to-back jumpers in the paint and Kirscher sinking two free throws with 13 seconds left in the game.
COURT NOTE
  • Jojola was the leading scorer for the Mountaineers with 11-points and had help from Kirscher who made eight-points in the game.
  • Western shot 25.9 percent (14-54) from the field, 31.3 percent (5-16) from three and 85.7 percent (6-7) from the free throw line.
  • Colorado Mesa leaned on Mariah Martin and Daniella Turner all game – Martin scoring 26-points and Turner scoring 23-points.
  • Defensively Kelsey Siemons was a huge factor with four blocks and a steal, and got help from Sophie Anderson who had two blocks and three steals.

Western will be back on the road Tuesday, Feb. 1 taking on Colorado Christian University at 5 p.m.
