ALAMOSA --- The Western Colorado football team used another stellar defensive effort to pick up its first win in Alamosa since 2000 as the Mountaineers defeated Adams State 24-10 Saturday night at Rex Stadium in the 74th Colorado Classic.
It also breaks a three-game skid for Western Colorado (3-0) against Adams State (0-3) as the Mountaineers take home the Colorado Classic trophy.
Western Colorado allowed just 311 yards of offense, shut out the Grizzlies in the second half and the only touchdown scored by the Grizzlies came on an interception returned for a touchdown in the first quarter - to tie the game 7-7 after
Connor Desch hit
Damian Macias with a 9-yard touchdown pass three minutes before to make it 7-0.
The Mountaineers took the lead early in the second quarter on an
Alec Fonseca 29-yard field goal and increased the lead to 17-7 on a 1-yard touchdown plunge by
Josh Cummings with 5:16 left in the second. Adams State made it 17-10 at the half after drilling a 48-yard field goal with 39 seconds remaining in the half.
Neither team got much going in the second half before Cummings scored for the Mountaineers with 1:19 left in the game from seven yards out to make it 24-10 and give Western breathing room.
Robert Garlock led the Mountainees with eight tackles while
Tim Mullin had six tackles, a forced fumble and a pass breakup and
Lane Farris had five tackles (1.5 for a loss), a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.
Cummings, the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week last week, again shined as he rushed for 154 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries while Desch added 39 yards on the ground and
Deyvon Butler had 33. Desch finished 13-for-27 for 166 yards, a touchdown and four interceptions. Macias led the team with four receptions, 45 yards and a touchdown.
The Mountaineers return home next week as they host Fort Lewis 1 p.m. at Mountaineer Bowl.
