Wagstaff breaks Western 3-point record, goes for 33 in win over Adams State on Senior Night

GUNNISON, Colo. --- Junior Emmery Wagstaff broke the Mountaineers' single-game 3-point record while scoring 33 points in Western Colorado's 83-70 win over Adams State on Saturday's Senior Night at Paul Wright Gym.

Wagstaff drained nine 3-pointers - breaking the old record of seven 3-pointers in a game by Kim White, Brooke Pendergraft and, most recently Samantha Coleman in 2019. Her 33 points is tied for sixth all-time in single-season Western history with Pendergraft - a point behind Hannah Cooper's total of 34 from earlier this season.

The junior finished 11-for-22 from the field overall, going while adding five rebounds, five steals and a block.

The Mountaineers (13-2 overall, 12-2 RMAC) started slow on Saturday, trailing by as much as eight points in the first quarter before cutting the deficit to 20-18 heading into the second.

Western took its first lead at 23-22 with 6:11 remaining on a Wagstaff 3-pointer and wouldn't trail again thanks to outscoring the Grizzlies (3-9, 3-9) 23-11 in the second to take a 41-31 lead at the half. The lead quickly grew to 20 points at 53-33 just four minutes into the second half before the Mountaineers cruised to the 13-point win.

Samantha Coleman and Mikaela Parker each had 12 points with Parker adding a team-high seven rebounds while Cooper had 11 points, six rebounds and six assists.

In a touching moment to start the game, senior Jessie Erickson - who injured her leg last week - scored the first basket of the game before being taken out to a round of applause and hugs by her teammates.

Laura Gutierrez led Adams State with 20 points.

The Mountaineers after the game honored senior team manager Madi Archuleta along with the seniors who won't be returning next season in Erickson, Jadyn Kanzler and Parker - who played their final regular-season home game at Paul Wright Gym on Saturday night.

The Mountaineers hit the road to take on Colorado Mesa on Friday and then end the regular season with a game at Westminster on Saturday.
