GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. --- The No. 14 Western Colorado women's basketball program took a 37-36 lead on Colorado Mesa after an
Emmery Wagstaff 3-pointer with 1:02 remaining in the third quarter.
But the Mavericks went on an 11-0 run that went into the fourth quarter and led the rest of the way as the Mountaineers fell 58-43 on Friday at Brownson Arena.
The loss for Western (13-3 overall, 12-3 RMAC) and a Colorado School of Mines win at Adams State puts the Mountaineers behind the Orediggers in RPI points average 15.35-14.8. Mines is done for the regular season, and even with a win at Westminster on Saturday, Western couldn't catch up the difference. However, the game still has significance as Western could drop to third with a loss to the Griffins on the road with Westminster moving to second.
As for Friday's contest, the Mountaineers were outscored by the Mavs (13-7, 13-7) 18-6 in the fourth quarter as Western went 1-for-11 from the field in the final 10 minutes - including 1-for-5 from 3-point range. Overall, the Mountaineers shot 22.2 percent from the field (12-for-54). Meanwhile, CMU went 7-for-15 in the final quarter and shot 35.9 percent overall (23-for-64.Â
Hannah Cooper led the Mountaineers with 18 points to go along with eight rebounds and three assists while
Samantha Coleman had 10 points, six rebounds and four steals.
Kylyn Rigsby led the Mavs with 20 points while Kelsey Siemons just missed a triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and nine blocked shots. Overall, CMU had 15 blocked shots in the game.
