THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Western Colorado def. Adams State, 158-89
Records: Western Colorado 3-3, Adams State 0-3
Location: Paul Wright Natatorium; Gunnison, Colo.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The medley relay kicked things off in the right direction for Western, staking the home team to a 14-2 lead, but ASU tried to bite into its deficit in the individual 200 free.
- Ryan Bustos (2:06.98) won the event for the Grizzlies with a teammate in fifth palce, but the Mountaineers took second, third and fourth place – Chloe Walker, Adelaide Rau and Grebe, respectively – to nearly negate Bustos' win.
- Western's first individual event winner came in the next event, the 100 backstroke, with Courtney Coplan finishing with a time of 1:01.39. Again, Western's depth pushed wider the gap on the team scoreboard, with third and fourth places complementing Coplan's victory.
- Western used second, third and fourth-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 50 free to once again offset ASU event wins, then added another event winner with O'Donnell's 55.87 clocking in the 100 free.
- A 1-2-3 finish in the 500 free ballooned the difference on the scoreboard as Lauren Linneman (5:38.23) led teammates O'Donnell (5:44.40) and Stier (5:55.69) to the pads for the sweep.
- Late in the even schedule it was Megan Walton adding another event win, leading a 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 individual medley with a winning time of 2:25.10.
- The final event victory for Western came on the 1-meter diving board where Sarah Mortenson posted a score of 367.60.
- Saturday's win over Adams State was the second this season, following up on a 177-43 win in a tri-meet at Colorado State University Pueblo on October 9.
