GUNNISON, Colo. --- The Western Colorado football team battled it out in Mountaineer Bowl on Saturday as they won an exciting game against New Mexico Highlands University. For their homecoming match up, the Mountaineers came out victorious 45-38 over the Cowboys.
The Mountaineers (5-1 overall, 4-1 RMAC) put together a memorable performance on Saturday as they put it all out on the line in Mountaineer Bowl in front of a packed stadium for homecoming. The Cowboys took the upper hand for most of the game, until the second half of the fourth quarter where Western Colorado scored 21 unanswered points to win by seven.
At the end of the first quarter N.M. Highlands led 14-3, the Mountaineers scored in the second quarter and held out the Cowboys to go into half time down four (14-10). Western Colorado scored two more touchdowns in the third and held N.M. Highlands to 10 points tying it up 24-24 heading into the fourth. The Cowboys then scored two unanswered touchdowns to go up 38-24, looking like they were go to bring home the victory. The Mountaineers had different plans. Western Colorado scored three straight touchdowns and walked away victorious.
Josh Cummings had a break through game as he put up four rushing touchdowns and led the Mountaineers with 163 yards rushing. Cummings longest rush for the day was 36 yards.
Qurterback
Connor Desch completed 14 of 33 passes for a total of 240 yard, with one passing touchdown and one rushing touchdowns. Putting the ball in the air 33 times he only threw one interception.
The Western Colorado defense recorded four sacks for 18 yards with
Will Lydle,
Lane Farris,
Jaden Armbrust and
Wyatt Buhr each recording one. Lydle and Armbrust each had 1.5 tackles for a loss and Farris and Buhr each had one.
Leading the receivers was Mountaineer
James Bryant who recorded five receptions for 121 yards, with a long of 77 yards.
Damian Macias was Western Colorado's next best with 75 yards and one touchdown.
The Mountaineers will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 16 as they host Black Hills State University in Mountaineer Bowl at 1 p.m.
