Mountaineer men rally in second half to beat Westminster, 74-67

GUNNISON, Colo. --- After scoring just 25 points in the first half and trailing at the break, the Western Colorado men's basketball team shot 60.9 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes and outscored Westminster 49-38 to win 74-67 Saturday night at Paul Wright Gym.

The Mountaineers (9-14 overall, 6-11 RMAC) trailing 31-25 early in the second half, but used a Cole Sienknecht 3-pointer to ignite a 7-0 run capped by a Cameron McCurry basket in the paint to take a 32-31 lead on the Griffins (14-9, 9-8) with 16:40 remaining.

The teams traded the lead several times over the next 12 minutes as WCU held a 60-59 advantage with 4:28 remaining in the contest. The Mountaineers then embarked on an 8-0 run - six of those points coming at the free-throw line - as the lead grew to 68-59 with a minute remaining.

From there the Mountaineers were able to close the game out at the line and pick up the victory.

Sienknecht led the Mountaineers with 18 points while going 3-for-5 from 3-point range, Connor Shaw had 11 points, Avery Rembao had 10 points and three rebounds while Monroe Porter again had a strong all-around game - scoring nine points and adding 11 rebounds, four assists and three steals.

The Mountaineers were strong on the glass as well, outrebounding the Griffins 34-29 - including limiting Westminster to four offensive rebounds.
