Mountaineers No. 5 in D2SIDA Women's Basketball Regional Poll

GUNNISON --- The Western Colorado women's basketball team comes in at No. 5 in the initial 2020-21 D2SIDA South Central Regional Poll released Monday.

The Mountaineers, who finished No. 5 in the NCAA South Central Regional Poll last season, sit behind top-ranked Lubbock Christian (which received all six first-place votes), No. 2 Texas A&M-Commerce, No. 3 West Texas A&M and No. 4 Colorado Mesa in the South Central Regional Poll (made up of the RMAC and the Lone Star Conference). After Western is Westminster, Angelo State, Colorado School of Mines, St. Edward's and St. Mary's (Texas).

The Mountaineers are coming off one of the top seasons in program history in 2019-20 as they went 20-7 overall (third-most wins in school history), 18-4 in the RMAC (most wins conference wins in program history) and earning the Mountaineers' first berth into the NCAA Tournament (which was canceled due to COVID-19 precautions).

Western, which fell to Division-I Colorado 77-50 in an exhibition contest Wednesday, were picked to finish second in the RMAC behind CMU in the RMAC Preseason Coaches Poll. 

The Mountaineers are scheduled to open their season 5:30 p.m. Friday at home against Black Hills State. There will be no spectators allowed at the contest - but it will be available to watch at GoMountaineers.com/Live.
