GRAND JUNCTION, Colo --- The Western Colorado women's soccer team battled for 110 minutes and withstood 39 shots from MSU Denver, yet still had a chance to win it as the final seconds of the second overtime counted down.
Missa Webb tracked down a loose ball near midfield and broke free, but the freshman forward's shot went just left of the goal. However, the Mountaineers picked up their first point in RMAC play with a 1-1 draw against the Roadrunners on Sunday at Walker Field.
WCU (0-7-1 overall, 0-3-1 RMAC) got a standout performance from goalkeeper
Kaeyla Noble as she picked up 11 saves - including a crucial one in the 79th minute on a MSU Denver (3-5-1, 2-1-1) penalty kick to keep the score tied 1-1.
The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the first half when
Andrea Grillo found a loose ball in front of the net after a set piece for WCU and knocked it into the net in the 22nd minute.
It appeared WCU was going to keep that lead heading into the half before the Mountaineers were called for a foul inside the box and MSU Denver's Jordan Lewis scored on the penalty kick in the 45th minute to tie it at 1-1 - the way the game would end.
Laura Pelino and
Macey Arseculeratne led WCU with two shots apiece, though the Mountaineers' only shot on goal turned out to be the Grillo goal.
The Mountaineers hit the road next week as they take on Black Hills State 7 p.m. Friday and Regis 1 p.m. Sunday.
