Mountaineers fall in home opener to the Mavericks

GUNNISON, Colo. --- Western Colorado volleyball falls to RMAC rivals of Colorado Mesa in the third set, losing 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-20). The Mountaineers (6-5 overall, 2-1 RMAC) now drop to 2-1 in the conference after Tuesday night's loss.
 
Western Colorado dropped the lead early in the first set then tried to hold on, but the Mavericks (6-5 overall, 2-1 RMAC) went on to win with a seven point lead, 25-18.
 
The Mountaineers then built up some momentum during the second set, holding a two point lead, only to let Colorado Mesa come back and claim a 25-20 victory.
 
In the third set, the Mavericks came out hot earning a 6-0 lead, the Mountaineers got within three points on two separate occasions, but could never close the gap – causing them to loses the set 25-20 and letting Colorado Mesa walk away with the victory.
 
Leading WCU in kills was freshman Jordyn Todd who was able to record 10 kills in the three sets played. Juniors Hanna Hendrickson and Lyria Brook also heavily contributed, as Hendrickson recorded 27 assists and Lyria had eight digs on the night. Both Emilee Scates and Myles Hilbert recorded six digs during the match.

The Mountaineers will be back on the court this Friday at 7 p.m. as they host Dixie State in Paul Wright Gym, then on Saturday they face off against Westminster College at home at 5 p.m. for their white-out game.
