GUNNISON, Colo. – Western Colorado University women's basketball outgun the Cougars 62-49. The Mountaineers started the game slow, but quickly took control and out scored the Cougars 37-19 by the end of the first half. Even with the Cougars out scoring the Mountaineers in the second half, Western was able to come away with its 13th win.
With 4:41 to play in the first quarter, Western and CCU were tied at six points. The Mountaineers proceeded to go on a 16-0 run over the next 6:51 and lead the Cougars 24-6 at the 7:50 mark of the second quarter.
Western's defense was prime form Friday night, holding CCU without a field goal for over eight minutes between the first and second quarters. The Mountaineers forced 11 CCU turnovers and held the Cougars to a pedestrian 36.4 percent (20-of-55) shooting from the field.
At halftime, the Mountaineers led CCU 37-19. Western held the Cougars to 26.9 percent shooting from the field in the first 20 minutes, compared to the Mountaineers' 50 percent (15-of-30) shooting.
All eight Mountaineers that saw playing time in the first half reached the scoring column, led by Jordyn Kanzler's 10 first-half points.
Western's leading scorer was
Jessie Erickson with 12 points, making 50 percent from the field (4-of-8).
Jadyn Kanzler was the only other Mountaineer in double digits, with 11 points shooting 62 percent from the field (5-of-8).
The Mountaineers are now 11-1 when they score 60 or more in a game.
Western out rebounded CCU 39-32, also making 80 percent of there free throws (16-of-20).
