GUNNISON, Colo. – For the second straight game, Western Colorado University men's basketball played into overtime. The Mountaineers were unable to outlast the Cougars of Colorado Christian University, falling by one point, 93-92.
There were three lead changes in the final 3:30 of regulation Friday night in Paul Wright Gym. However, when the dust settled, both Western (3-17, 0-14 RMAC) and CCU (6-14, 4-10 RMAC) had scored 81 points.
In overtime, there were five lead exchanges as the Mountaineers and Cougars each created scoring opportunities in the final five minutes of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference showdown.
Cole Sienknecht scored eight of Western's 11 overtime points. Sienknecht led all players on Friday night with 21 points. It's the fourth straight game scoring 20 or more points and ninth straight scoring in double figures for Sienknecht.
Sharp-shooting
James Willis propelled the Mountaineers to a 40-38 lead at halftime. Willis made five-of-seven three-point attempts in the first 20 minutes to lead all players with 15. Willis scored a career-high 20 points on the night, making six three-pointers.
Forward
Jackson Ehrlin recorded his second double-double of the season, grabbing 15 rebounds and scoring 15 points. Ehrlin also had six assists against the Cougars.
Monroe Porter and
Brady Subart also reached double figures in scoring. Subart scored 17 points, while Porter added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Western will look to rebound Saturday night when they host Regis University at 7 p.m. in Paul Wright Gym.
