GUNNISON, Colo. --- The Western Colorado women's basketball team was impressive in its home opener as it held Chadron State to 26 percent shooting and forced 24 Eagle turnovers on it way to moving to 3-0 in RMAC play with a 69-43 victory Friday at Paul Wright Gym.
The Mountaineers (5-2 overall, 3-0 RMAC), who have won five in a row since dropping their first two games of the season, used a 6-0 run to end the first quarter - capped by a
Katie Dalton bucket in the paint - to take an 18-11 lead at the end of the quarter. That turned into a 16-2 run that went midway into the second quarter as a
Courtney Humbarger basket in the paint made it 28-13 as WCU led the Eagles (3-9, 1-2) by double figures the rest of the way (leading by 31 at one point - 69-38 late in the fourth) .
Along with holding CSC to 26 percent shooting from the field (13-for-50), WCU limited the Eagles to 2-for-10 from 3-point range and scored 18 points off of the 24 CSC turnovers.
The Mountaineers had a balanced night as far as scoring with 12 players reaching the scoring column - led by
Hannah Cooper and
Jadyn Kanzler (in just 13 minutes) with 14 points apiece. Cooper, a freshman, was 3-for-4 from 3-point range, 3-for-3 from the line and added a team-high four assists plus three rebounds. Kanzler had six rebounds and three blocks to go along with 14 points. Dalton finished with nine points and three steals.
