GUNNISON, Colo. --- The Western Colorado women's basketball kept on rolling behind another strong defensive effort as the Mountaineers held MSU Denver to 27.3 percent shooting to win their sixth in a row in a 56-43 victory Saturday night at Paul Wright Gym.
WCU (6-2 overall, 4-0 RMAC) jumped ahead in a slow-starting first quarter as the Mountaineers led MSU Denver (3-7,2-2) 5-4 midway through the period before a bucket by
Jadyn Kanzler ignited an 8-0 WCU run - highlighted by a 3-pointer and a three-point play by
Gabie Doud - to make it 13-4 with 2:23 remaining in the quarter.
The Mountaineers led the rest of the way, but saw its lead get cut to five points early in the third quarter at 25-20. WCU answered as a 10-1 run over the next four minutes increased the lead to 35-21 and the lead grew to as large as 17 points after a Doud 3-pointer made it 43-26.
MSU Denver got the deficit to single figures a pair of times in the fourth, but never threatened as the Mountaineers came away with their sixth win a row - the longest winning streak for the program since the 2007-08 season.
Doud led WCU with a season-high 19 points and eight rebounds - connecting on 4 of 7 3-pointers.
Hannah Cooper had 15 points, five assists and four steals for the Mountaineers while
Samantha Coleman had seven points and five rebounds. As a team, the Mountaineers shot 50 percent (19-for-38) which helped it overcome a season-high 27 turnovers.
Defensively, WCU held MSU Denver to 15-for-55 shooting from the field, including 3-for-15 from 3-point range. The Mountaineers also forced 19 turnovers.
The victory sets up a matchup of teams undefeated in RMAC play in Grand Junction 5:30 p.m. Friday as the Mountaineers travel to take on Colorado Mesa.Â
