Big first half propels Mountaineers past Pacific Union

GUNNISON, Colo. --- The Western Colorado men's basketball team scored the first 12 points of the game on its way to a dominant first half in a 94-69 victory over Pacific Union at the Comfort Inn Classic on Saturday at Paul Wright Gym.

The Mountaineers (2-2) shot 55.2 percent from the field (16-for-29), went 15-for-15 from the free throw line and held the Pioneers (2-10) to 25.8 percent shooting (8-for-31) in the first half to build a 51-25 lead at the break.

The big first half for WCU was kicked off by the 12-0 run to start the game - including two 3-pointers and eight points from Cole Sienknecht, his final 3-pointer making it 12-0 with 17:25 remaining in the first half and forcing Pacific Union to call timeout.

The lead grew to 21 points with 5:25 left in the first half on a Josh Tomasi bucket assisted by Sienknecht and increased to as large as 32 points before taking a 26-point lead into the half.

Pacific Union wouldn't get within 16 points the rest of the contest as the Mountaineers cruised to the win.

Tomasi led WCU with 25 points and nine rebounds while Sienknecht had 21 points and a team-best five assists.

WCU heads to Grand Junction next weekend to participate in the CMU Holiday Inn - Airport Thanksgiving Classic. The Mountaineers take on Montana Western 2 p.m. Friday and Missouri Western State 2 p.m. Saturday.
