Mountaineer volleyball wrap up the 2019 season in Grand Junction

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. --- Western Colorado volleyball plays their last match of the 2019 season on the road Friday night against Colorado Mesa University. The Mountaineers came up short against the Mavericks 3-0 (25-20, 25-11, 25-22) in Brownson Arena.

Early in the first set, the Mountaineers gave up a few too many points as they allowed for the Mavericks to lead by up to seven points. They were then able to slowly gain traction over the Mavericks but ran out of time as CMU took the lead 25-20.

The second set wasn't in the Mountaineers favor as Colorado Mesa took an early command, then maintained their lead to take the victory 25-11.

The Mountaineers regained their momentum as they played tough in the third set. WCU held the lead 20-19, before a service error tied it up and gave the Mavericks the boost they needed to close out the set 25-22.

The Mountaineers played tough on defense as Emilee Scates recorded four blocks, with Brianna Hardy earing three and Hanna Hendrickson with two. Hendrickson also lead the team in assists with 16 on the night. Freshmen Jordyn Todd and Myles Hilbert each earned ten or more digs on the night, Todd also recorded an ace and six kills in the three set match. Maddy Johnson also recorded six kills, as Kirsten Companik lead the team with seven kills.

With Friday's loss the Mountaineers finish the season 11-15 overall and 7-11 in the RMAC, coming just short of making the conference tournament the Mountaineers will begin preparation for the 2020 season.
