Mountaineers rally to beat New Mexico Highlands in overtime

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. --- The Western Colorado women's soccer team battled back from a 2-1 second-half deficit against New Mexico Highlands as Andrea Grillo scored the equalizer in the 72nd minute before Megan Wheelock headed in the game-winner in overtime to beat the Cowgirls 3-2 on Sunday at Walker Field.

The Mountaineers (2-10-1 overall, 2-7-1 RMAC) trailed twice in the contest against NMHU (0-11, 0-9) as the Cowgirls struck first in the 27th minute only to see Casey Elnicki take a pass from Grillo and score less than two minutes later to tie the match at 1-1 heading into halftime.

Again NMHU took the lead as the Cowgirls scored in the 63rd minute. But WCU bounced back as a great through pass from Elnicki hit Grillo in stride and she beat the keeper on the run to tie the match in the 72nd minute.

Down to the final minute in the first overtime period, the Mountaineers were awarded a corner kick. Sarah Johnson took the corner and laid a beautiful pass directly in front of the goal where Wheelock slipped in and headed it in to give WCU their second win in a row.

It was a balanced attack for the Mountaineers as Elnicki took three shots while Wheelock, Grillo, Caileen Sienknecht, Parker Barnhardt, Alex Mason and Laura Pelino each took two.

WCU keeper Kaeyla Noble nearly had double-digit saves for the second game in a row, finishing with nine.

The Mountaineers hit the road next week as they play at Fort Lewis on Friday and Adams State on Sunday.
