GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. --- The Western Colorado women's soccer team grinded out 90 minutes against rival Colorado Mesa, but fell just short as a first-half loose ball on a corner kick that was punched in was the difference in a 1-0 loss to the Mavericks at Walker Field.
Â
The Mountaineers (0-10-1 overall, 0-7-1 RMAC) fell behind 1-0 in the 11th minute when Colorado Mesa booted a corner kick that WCU keeper
Kaeyla Noble punched out, but went right to CMU's Alexis Allard who knocked it in to give the Mavs (6-4-1, 4-3-1) the lead.
Â
The Mountaineers locked up defensively behind seven saves from Noble, but couldn't find the equalizer over the final 79 minutes.
Â
WCU finished with a pair of shot in the game with
Megan Wheelock and
Caileen Sienknecht each getting a shot off.
Â
The Mountaineers continue RMAC action next week as they take on CSU-Pueblo and New Mexico Highlands on Friday and Sunday, respectively, at Walker Field in Grand Junction.
