ALAMOSA, Colo. – A second-half surge was too great for the Mountaineers as Western Colorado University fell to Adams State University 89-98 on the road.

Neither team could gain much ground on the other in the first half. With 1:12 left in the first, Western (3-14, 0-11 RMAC) and ASU (5-11, 5-6 RMAC) were knotted at 40 points. The Grizzlies managed four free throws to end the half ahead, 44-40.

Following a
Brady Subart old fashion three-point play, the Mountaineers trailed ASU by four points 52-56 at the 15:42 mark. However, a 9-3 run by the Grizzlies over the next 1:47 stretched the lead to 10 points, and the Mountaineers were unable to mount a comeback.

Subart scored 20 points against ASU, while also recording a game-high six assists. It's the second game this season Subart has scored 20 or more points.

Cole Sienknecht led Western in scoring with 22 points. It's the third time this season Sienknecht has scored 20 or more points and the sixth straight game the freshman has reached double figures in scoring. Sienknecht also added six rebounds.

Monroe Porter,
James Willis and
Jackson Ehrlin also reached double figures. Porter had 11 points and led the team in rebounds with seven. Ehrlin added 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field. Willis recorded 12 points, collecting five rebounds.

As a team, Western shot 48.3 percent (29-of-60) against the Grizzlies on the road.

The Mountaineers will return for a four-game home stand, starting with Westminster College at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night in Paul Wright Gym.
