VB | Western falls just short to NMHU

GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State Colorado University Volleyball hosted New Mexico Highlands University in the conference and home opener on Friday night in Paul Wright Gym. The Mountaineers were unable to topple the Cowgirls, falling in three sets (16-25, 20-25, 24-26).
 
Western (1-8, 0-1 RMAC) played NMHU (3-6, 1-0 RMAC) point-for-point for much of the match. However, after falling in the first two sets the Mountaineers came alive in the third.
 
After being tied 10-10 in the third, Western completed a 12-6 run to take a 22-16 lead.
 
The Mountaineers were one point from forcing a fourth set, 24-20, but six unanswered points by the Cowgirls put an end to the match.
 
Kirsten Companik led the Mountaineers with seven kills and 7.5 points.
 
Three other Mountaineers, Emilee Scates, Kathleen Kasel and Chelsea Bostwick each contributed six kills.
 
Western setter Hanna Hendrickson led all players with 27 assists.
 
NMHU's Tiffany Matchett paced the match with nine kills and two solo blocks.
 
The Mountaineers will return to the court on Saturday at 3 p.m. when they host Colorado State University – Pueblo in Paul Wright Gym.
