COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Western State Colorado University Women's Soccer faced the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs in the first of a two-match road trip on Friday evening. Under the lights, the Mountaineers came up just short against the Mountain Lions, falling 2-0.
Just 11 minutes into the match, a questionable penalty was called against Western (1-6, 1-2 RMAC) inside the Mountaineers' 18-yard box, giving UCCS (5-1-1, 3-0 RMAC) a penalty kick. The Mountain Lions converted the kick, which would be the game-winning goal.
Tarah Patterson scored the penalty kick for her fifth goal of the season. Patterson proved to be a pest for Mountaineer defenders throughout the match, tallying a game-high seven shots.
Despite going down one goal early in the match, the Mountaineers continued to battle and created opportunities in front of net.

At the break, Western trailed UCCS 1-0.
Patterson scored her second goal of the match for UCCS in the 65
th minute, to give the Mountain Lions a 2-0 lead with 25 minutes left to play.
Following the UCCS goal, the Mountaineers created five more shots, but were unable to slide one past the Mountain Lion goalkeeper.
Western will continue the road trip on Sunday when they face 11
th-ranked Metro State University Denver at 1 p.m. in Denver, Colorado.
