KEARNEY, Neb. – Western State Colorado University Women's Soccer opened the 2018 season this weekend on the road in Kearney, Nebraska. The Mountaineers face Newman University on Sunday, but came away just shy of a victory, falling 2-0 to the Jets.

Newman was the first to get on the scoreboard with a goal by Colleen Howland in the 15th minute.

The Mountaineers tried to penetrate the Jets' defensive third, but were thwarted, being out shot in the first 45 minutes, 4-1.

Western's offense improved in the second half, notching three shots in the final 45. However, Newman was able to find the net for a second time in the 60th minute with a goal by Grace Linton from 20-yards away.

Andrea Grillo led the team in shooting with two.

Emilie Eckhart played all 90 minutes in net for the Mountaineers, recording three saves on eight shots.

The Mountaineers will continue the season next Friday against Humboldt State University in Grand Junction, Colorado.
