WSOC | Mountaineers bury Cougars

GUNNISON, Colo. – It took less than two minutes for Western State Colorado University Women's Soccer to take the lead against Colorado Christian University. The Mountaineers held on for a 2-1 win over the Cougars.

Western (1-5, 1-1 RMAC) earned a corner kick less than a minute into the match. Megan Wheelock kicked it down the end line and found Aly Hargrove just in front of the net. Hargrove put it into the back of the net for her first career goal.

The Mountaineers maintained the early lead and took a 1-0 lead into the break, despite being outshot 4-3 in the first half.

CCU (2-3-1, 0-2 RMAC) replicated the Mountaineers' first-half goal, scoring two minutes into the second half on a corner kick. Kennady McCullough headed the Renee De La Torre kick into the net for her first of the season.

After eight minutes, Western regained the lead. Katie Desch raced down the left side of the field, cut back to her right, and placed a shot on net. The CCU goalkeeper dove for the save, repelling the ball back in front of the net. Western's Casey Ober was there to grab the rebound, kicking it past the keeper for the game-winner.

Western keeper Emilie Eckhart picked up her first win of the season, recording nine saves.

The Mountaineers will continue the season on the road next Friday against UC-Colorado Springs.
