WSOC | Mountaineers hang tough against 7th-ranked Orediggers

GUNNISON, Colo. – Facing the seventh-ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on Friday, Western State Colorado University looked like a nationally ranked team. The Mountaineers matched the Orediggers step-for-step throughout the match, but a late first half goal by CSM was enough to down the Mountaineers.

Western (0-5, 0-1 RMAC) opened the match on a mission. The Orediggers looked stunned as Western put two on net in the first seven minutes.

CSM (4-0-1, 1-0 RMAC) eventually settled into the match and with time running out in the first half, notched the only goal of the game.

A nice play down the right side of the field found CSM's Giselle Sawaged near the edge of the six-yard box. Sawaged slid the ball across the net and found the foot of Nicole LaTourette for her second goal of the season in the 42nd minute.

The Mountaineers recorded five shots on the match, placing four on target.

Western's Emilie Eckhart made seven saves, many on very good attempts by the Orediggers.

108 fans attended Friday afternoon's match, and the Mountaineers will be looking for that same support on Sunday when they host Colorado Christian University at 1 p.m. on Gateway Field.
