GUNNISON, Colo. – Facing the seventh-ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on Friday, Western State Colorado University looked like a nationally ranked team. The Mountaineers matched the Orediggers step-for-step throughout the match, but a late first half goal by CSM was enough to down the Mountaineers.
Â
Western (0-5, 0-1 RMAC) opened the match on a mission. The Orediggers looked stunned as Western put two on net in the first seven minutes.
Â
CSM (4-0-1, 1-0 RMAC) eventually settled into the match and with time running out in the first half, notched the only goal of the game.
Â
A nice play down the right side of the field found CSM's Giselle Sawaged near the edge of the six-yard box. Sawaged slid the ball across the net and found the foot of Nicole LaTourette for her second goal of the season in the 42
nd minute.
Â
The Mountaineers recorded five shots on the match, placing four on target.
Â
Western's
Emilie Eckhart made seven saves, many on very good attempts by the Orediggers.
Â
108 fans attended Friday afternoon's match, and the Mountaineers will be looking for that same support on Sunday when they host Colorado Christian University at 1 p.m. on Gateway Field.
