CHADRON, Neb. – A road game at the Chicoine Center was not enough to disrupt the Western Colorado University Women's Basketball team as they capitalized on turnovers to take a win at Chadron State University 62-48.
Despite a slow start, Western (4-2, 2-2 RMAC) continued a trend of buckling down on defense to force a total of 34 Chadron State (1-9, 0-4 RMAC) turnovers en route to a road victory.
Chadron committed 21 turnovers in the first half alone and Western took full advantage of the opportunities as they scored 31 points off those miscues.
But it was not until the fourth quarter that the Mountaineers truly came alive, scoring 22 points to outdistance the Eagles. Western opened the fourth quarter with three, three-point baskets in their first four possessions to push their advantage to 13 points.
But that was not enough. Western held Chadron scoreless for 6:10 in the fourth quarter to amass a 24 point lead.
On the night, the Mountaineers shot 41.2% from the floor and 36.8% from three-point in overcoming the Eagles. But Western's production off Chadron turnovers was the difference in the game.
Taytem Coleman led all scorers with 12 points on the night, shooting 50% from three-point range.
Both
Katie Dalton and
Mikaela Parker added nine for the Mountaineers. Parker's production came on 4-4 shooting from the floor as she recorded nine points in just ten minutes of action.
It took until the 6:42 mark of the second quarter for Western to get rolling, but once they did they never looked back. After a
Tammarrah Gothard free throw pulled Western within six, it was on for the Mountaineers.
Western closed the first half on an 8-0 run to take a 24-20 lead into the break.
Following the win, Western looks to a Sunday afternoon matchup versus Metropolitan State University of Denver.
