WBB | Western set to open RMAC schedule against Colorado Mesa

GUNNISON, Colo. – After two consecutive wins to start the season, Western Colorado University Women's Basketball opens the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday against Colorado Mesa University. Tip off is set for 5:00 p.m. in Paul Wright Gym.

Western (2-0 0-0 RMAC) is coming off a weekend sweep at the CMU Holiday Inn-Airport Thanksgiving Classic. The Mountaineers opened the season with a win, besting former RMAC competitor Western New Mexico 56-52 down the stretch. The following day, Western took the win over Arizona Christian University in dominant fashion in the fourth quarter.

Entering the RMAC regular season, Western looks much improved on defense in 2018. Through two games, Western is allowing 56.5 points per game – the fourth lowest tally in the RMAC.

Following on a trend set last season, Tammarrah Gothard is averaging 2.5 steals per game, the fifth most in the RMAC.

But it is not just defensive effort, as the Mountaineers are maintaining a 10.5 point margin over their opponents. Much of that success can be attributed to Western shooting 44.5% from the floor.

In a balanced offense, four women are averaging over seven points per game. Katie Dalton leads the team in scoring with 10.4 points per game.

Against Colorado Mesa University (3-1 0-0 RMAC), Western faces a team averaging over 70 points per game.

In their last match-up dating to last season, the Mountaineers downed the Mavericks 62-58 in an upset victory at Paul Wright Gym.

Colorado Mesa features a dominant scoring presence in Jaylyn Duran who is averaging 24.3 points per season – the best in the RMAC this season.

The Mountaineer faithful are encouraged to come out and support the team on Saturday. For those who cannot make it to Paul Wright Gym, you can follow all of the action from the links above. Be sure to check back to gomountaineers.com for stats and a full recap of the action.
