WSOC | Western narrowly misses against CMU

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A fast start was soon put to rest as Western Colorado University fell to Colorado Mesa University, 1-0 on Sunday in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Western (2-9, 2-5 RMAC) started the match against CMU (4-5-2, 2-4-1 RMAC) with three unanswered shots in the first 13 minutes.

However, momentum shifted and the Mavericks recorded the next four shots, followed by the game winning goal in the 29th minute.

Ryanne Parker scored the goal for CMU. It was her second of the season.

Following the goal, the next shot by either team wasn't until the very end of the first half. Western's Ingrid Alvarez swung a corner kick into the box. The pass found Casey Ober's head, but the shot sailed just wide of the net.

Alvarez led the team in shots with three.

Mountaineer goalkeeper Emilie Eckhart, the conference leader in total saves heading into the weekend, recorded eight more saves in the match.

The Mavericks recorded seven second-half shots to lead Western 12-7 in total shots.

Western continues the road trip next Friday afternoon at CSU-Pueblo.
