WSOC | Western wins thriller against Adams State

GUNNISON, Colo. – Western Colorado University played the final home game of 2018 on Sunday against Adams State University. It was also the final game scheduled to be played on Gateway Field. In front of 238 fans, the Mountaineers went off in-style, defeating the rival Grizzlies 2-1.

Late in the match, both teams were tied 1-1. Western's Ingrid Alvarez lined-up a corner kick from the left side. The senior swung the ball over the keeper and into the net, scoring the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute.

With the goal, Alvarez now has the most career game winning goals in school history with five. Always coming through against Adams State, Alvarez has scored the game-winner in three matches against the Grizzlies during her career.

The win gives Western six straight over their rival from the south.

Annie Grillo opened the scoring on Sunday. Grillo scored in the 42nd minute after Casey Ober flicked the ball over the back line with a superb header.

Western went into the halftime break, leading ASU 1-0.

The Grizzlies pulled even in the 66th minute. A shot by ASU's Diana Cerillo rattled off the post and Victoria Sanchez was there on the rebound to put the ball into the back of the net.

Western outshot the Grizzlies 24-13, forcing the ASU keeper to make 10 saves.

The Mountaineers are now tied for 10th in the conference standings with 13 conference points. Colorado Mesa University sits two points ahead of Western in eighth place. The top eight teams make the conference tournament.

Western has two more regular season matches in the 2018 season. The Mountaineers travel to Westminster College and Dixie State University next weekend, looking for two wins to make the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.
