WSOC | Skyhawks get past Mountaineers

GUNNISON, Colo. – Scoring opportunities were tough to come by for both Western Colorado University and Fort Lewis College on Friday. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, the Skyhawks were able to find the back of the net and take a 1-0 win on Gateway Field.

Western (3-10-1, 3-6-1 RMAC) and FLC (5-8-1, 4-6 RMAC) were at a stalemate through the first 72 minutes of the match.

The game-winning goal came in the 73rd minute, when FLC's Katie Smith played a through ball down the left side. Charlie Kiser took one touch and shot the ball across the net, scoring her first goal of the season.

Neither team was able to create many scoring opportunities. However, for most of the match, Western looked the more dangerous squad.

The Mountaineers nearly broke open the scoring in the 39th minute when Katie Desch launched a rocket near the top of the net. A great save by the Skyhawk goalkeeper kept the clean sheet alive.

FLC outshot the Mountaineers 4-3 in the first half and 10-4 for the entire match.

Western goalkeeper Emilie Eckhart made five saves in the match.

The Mountaineers will end their home schedule this Sunday at 1 p.m. against Adams State University. Western will honor their seven seniors prior to the match at 12:45 p.m.
