WSOC | Mountaineers power past NMHU

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Tying a season high for goals scored, Western Colorado University rolled to a 3-1 win over New Mexico Highlands University on Sunday.

It took only one minute before Western (3-9-1, 3-5-1 RMAC) opened the scoring. Megan Wheelock converted a penalty to score her second goal of the season.

Wheelock would score her third goal of the season on her second penalty kick of the match six minutes into the second half. The goal is Wheelock's first game-winner of the season.

Ingrid Alvarez put the match to bed in the 72nd minute. Coming off a free kick from Jessie Jacobsen just outside the penalty box, Alvarez one-timed her shot past the keeper for her first goal of the season.

NMHU (1-10-1, 1-7-1 RMAC) scored their only goal of the match, one minute after Alvarez's goal.

The win helps keep the Mountaineer hopes alive for a third-straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament berth.

Western goalkeeper Emilie Eckhart recorded eight saves in Sunday's match for 19 saves over the weekend.

The Mountaineers return to Gunnison for their final two home matches of the season next weekend. Western hosts Fort Lewis College at 3 p.m. on Friday for the team's annual Pink Match. On Sunday, the Mountaineers will honor their seniors prior to a 1 p.m. match against rival Adams State University.
