GUNNISON, Colo. – With snow on the ground, Western State Colorado University men's basketball looks to match the campus environment in Paul Wright Gym. Tuesday's clash with Colorado Mesa University will be a white out with tip-off set for 7:30 pm. All fans are encouraged to wear white when attending the game.
The first fans through the gate will also receive a white-out themed basketball t-shirt, courtesy of Mountaineer women's and men's basketball teams.
After winning two games this past weekend, Western (9-12, 7-8 RMAC) looks to extend a five-game home win streak. But, Colorado Mesa (10-11, 6-9 RMAC) won't let that happen easily.
The last three-times these teams squared off the result has been decided by two-points or less. In their last outing, the Mountaineers lost to the Mavericks on a buzzer beater in Grand Junction. That game was a role reversal from a match-up last season that saw Western take the game on a three-point buzzer beater in Paul Wright Gym.
Western should have no problem putting points on the board as they continue to average 83 points per game. On any given night, the Mountaineers can count on one of four players to shoulder the scoring load, but
Ben Beauchamp and Colin Smith have been rock steady for Western averaging 17 and 15.5 points per game. Both are in the top ten for scoring in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Colorado Mesa's efficient offense is shooting 47% on the season while scoring 80 points per game. The Mavericks are also sensitive with the rock as one of only four teams in the RMAC to have a turnover ratio higher than +1.
Led by Connor Nichols 18.2 points per game and Emilio Acedo's 17.6 the Mavericks have a terrific tandem in the backcourt.
Following Tuesday's game, Western hits the road to Salt Lake City, Utah for a Friday night game against Westminster College. Westminster (16-3, 12-3 RMAC) is the second-ranked team in the RMAC. Led by the dominant scoring presence of Dayon Goodman's 27.2 points per game the Griffins have won seven of their last eight games.
But, when Westminster came to Paul Wright Gym earlier this season, Western walked out with a thrilling overtime victory.
For those who can't make either game, all the action will be streamed through Stretch Internet along with live stats through gomountaineers.com.
