GUNNISON, Colo. – It took a little over 90 minutes Friday afternoon in Gunnison for Western State Colorado University women's soccer to record a result. However, the Mountaineers found the result they were looking for, and the result they deserved, defeating rival Adams State University 2-1 in overtime.
Â
With less than three minutes remaining in regulation, time was running out for Western (4-3-1, 3-1 RMAC). The Mountaineers had fallen behind 1-0 early in the first half and were unable to find an equalizer.
Â
All that changed in the 88
th minute.
Paige Massey received a cross from
Ingrid Alvarez near the edge of the six-yard box on the left side of the net. Massey took a touch and slotted the ball into the left corner.
Â
The goal was Massey's team-leading third goal of the season.
Â
The Mountaineers and Adams State (1-5-2, 0-4 RMAC) heading into overtime.
Â
Instead of waiting until the end of overtime to score, Alvarez took care of the suspense two minutes into overtime. Alvarez took a through pass from
Taylor Frick down the right side and hammered home a shot from the edge of the 18-yard box.
"I think the girls showed a lot of resilience today," Western Head Coach
Amy Bell said. "There are days where things just don't bounce your way and we had to fight through that and play tough. We are happy to start Homecoming Weekend with a win."
Â
The goal was Alvarez's second game winner of the season and fourth of her career, which puts her into a tie for the most game winners in program history with teammate
Francesca Rand.
Â
Western dominated the match from start to finish. An unlucky goal by the Grizzlies in the 26
th minute nearly gave ASU a critical three points in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings.
Â
The Mountaineers outshot Adams State 24-8. Massey and Alvarez each recorded five shots on their own. Western's 24 shots ties for fifth most in a match for the Mountaineers.
Â
Western will continue the season on Sunday in Durango, Colorado against Fort Lewis College.
