WSOC | Comeback falls short against Skyhawks

DURANGO, Colo. – A tough back line kept the Western State Colorado University women's soccer team off the board for much of the match on Sunday. The Mountaineers were able to break through midway into the second half, but were unable to come away with a win, falling to Fort Lewis College 2-1 on the road.

Western (4-4-1, 3-2 RMAC) seemed just one pass away from scoring multiple times against FLC (2-6-1, 2-4-1 RMAC), but the Skyhawk's defense were continually in the right place at the right time to thwart the attack.

The Mountaineers were able to get the ball into the back of the net in the 67th minute. Andrea Grillo scored the goal for Western after receiving a pass from forward Megan Wheelock.

Unfortunately for Western, the Skyhawks had already scored twice. FLC striker Renee Terrell took a through ball and out ran everyone for the first goal of the match in the 31st minute.

FLC scored again in the second half. This time it was Meredith Curran who scored for the Skyhawks, giving them a 2-0 lead in the 65th minute.

A very even match, both teams moved the ball up and down the field. Each team recorded seven shots on target.

Jessica Kresl led Western in shots, recording three on the day.

Emilie Eckhart played all 90 minutes in net for the Mountaineers, making five saves.

The Mountaineers are now alone in sixth place with nine points in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Standings.

The road trip continues for Western next Friday when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado to face UC-Colorado Springs.
