WSOC | Western prepares for two RMAC contests

GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State Colorado University women's soccer will look to keep their win streak alive this weekend. The Mountaineers host Adams State University on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. before traveling to Durango, Colorado for a 12 p.m. match against Fort Lewis College on Sunday.

Western (3-3-1, 2-1 RMAC) is coming off a 2-0 victory over Westminster College last Sunday in Gunnison. Andrea Grillo scored the game-winner while Megan Wheelock provided the insurance goal against the Griffins.

Friday will be the fifth consecutive home game for the Mountaineers. It will also be the midway point of the season, with eight games played and eight remaining.

The Mountaineers are currently sitting tied for fifth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings. Western is three points behind two teams tied for second and four behind the first-place Regis University Rangers.

As a team, Western ranks third in the conference for total shots. The Mountaineer offense has recorded 91 shots this season. Western's 13 shots per game average is second best in the RMAC.

Jessica Kresl and Paige Massey are leading the Western shooting onslaught. Both have recorded a team-high 22 shots.  Kresl also leads the team in total points with six after scoring twice and adding two assists this season.

Against ASU (1-4-2, 0-3-1 RMAC), the Mountaineers have won four straight and haven't lost to the Grizzlies since Western's inaugural season in 2012. Overall, the Mountaineers hold a 4-2-1 series lead and are 2-1 at home against Adams State.

The Grizzlies enter the weekend having lost their last three matches. ASU's only victory of the season came against Eastern New Mexico University on Sept. 3. Adams State is currently 11th in the conference standings.

Top scorer for ASU, recording two goals this season, is Braquelle Calley.

Fort Lewis (1-5-1, 1-3 RMAC) begin the weekend hosting UC-Colorado Springs on Friday after noon. The Skyhawks are riding a two-match losing streak. Their lone win of the season came against New Mexico Highlands University on Sept. 17. FLC defeated the Cowgirls 1-0 on the road.

The Skyhawks are tied for ninth in the conference standings with three points.

Goal scoring this season has been an issue for FLC. The Skyhawks have scored just three goals in seven games, which places them tied for 12th in the conference for goals scored. In their seven matches this season, FLC has been shutout five times.

Alicia Sanchez leads FLC in total shots with 15. Sanchez is also tied with two other teammates for the team goal lead. Each have scored once this season.
