WSOC | Western rolls past Griffins

GUNNISON, Colo. – Fans came out in droves to watch Western State Colorado University women's soccer face Westminster College on Sunday. The Mountaineers didn't disappoint the record crowd, defeating the Griffins 2-0.

Western (3-3-1, 2-1 RMAC) picked up three crucial points Sunday against Westminster (4-4, 1-2 RMAC). The Mountaineers dominated the first half of play, scoring twice before the halftime whistle.

Annie Grillo got the scoring underway in the 28th minute. After receiving a through ball down the right side of the field, Grillo cut the ball back near the edge of the 18-yard box and hit the ball into the upper left corner of the goal. It was Grillo's first goal of the season.

A little over six minutes later and Megan Wheelock made it 2-0 Western. Once again attacking from the right side, Ingrid Alvarez placed a ball perfectly across the face of the net, finding Wheelock's foot near the penalty kick spot. Wheelock shot it across the net, scoring her first of the season.

Alvarez earned the assist on the second Mountaineer goal. It was Alvarez's second of the season.

Western pressured the Westminster back line in the first half, trying to get behind the defense. In total, Western was caught offside six times.

In the second half, Westminster pushed three forwards into the Western defense. However, the Mountaineer defense held strong in the face of intense pressure. The Griffins outshot Western 9-2 in the final 45 minutes.

Mountaineer goalie Emilie Eckhart recorded her first career solo shutout. Eckhart made five saves to preserve Western's third shutout of the season.

The Mountaineers got the win in front of a Gateway Field attendance record of 343 fans.

Western will continue the home stand next Friday at 3 p.m. against Adams State University.
