GUNNISON, Colo. – Western State Colorado University Women's Soccer dominated their match of Friday afternoon. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, they were unable to come away with a win as a disputed goal didn't go in their favor. Colorado Mesa University defeated Western 1-0 on Gateway Field.
Â
Western (2-3-1, 1-1 RMAC) had more quality opportunities than their opponents on Friday afternoon in Gunnison, but were unable to convert as CMU (4-3, 1-1 RMAC) took advantage.
Â
While both teams came away with 19 shots, it was Western that dominated the play and continually looked to be the better team. The Mavericks would counter the Mountaineer opportunities but their attack never threatened the Western defense.
Â
In the 81
st minute, the Mavericks struck gold on a shot that bounced off the right post. The rebound looked to be stopped by Western goalie
Katie Simpson-Johnson, but the linesman ruled it went past the plane and constituted a goal.
Â
After the goal, Western would counter with a tremendous free kick by
Kimberlee Bourelle in the 84
th minute. Bourelle's shot was deflected over the crossbar and setup a corner kick for the Mountaineers.
Â
Francesca Rand nearly scored on the corner kick opportunity, but again the CMU keeper deflected the shot out of bounds. Another corner by Rand put the Mavericks in danger, but
Ingrid Alvarez's shot would sail just wide.
Â
Western's
Paige Massey tied for a game high five shots while Simpson-Johnson saved a game high 10 shots.
Â
The Mountaineers will continue the home stand this Sunday at 1 p.m. when they host Westminster College on Gateway Field.
