WSOC | Mountaineers explode against Yellow Jackets

GUNNISON, Colo. – On a sunny Friday afternoon in Gunnison, Colorado, Western State Colorado University women's soccer put on a show for the 127 in attendance. The Mountaineers defeated Black Hills State University 7-0 in the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match of the season.

Western (2-2-1, 1-0 RMAC) tied program highs for most goals scored in a single match and largest goal differential in a win. The Mountaineers defeated Johnson & Wales University 7-0 in 2013.

It didn't take long for the Mountaineers to break the 0-0 tie on Friday. Opening the scoring for Western was midfielder Paige Massey. Massey took a pass from Jessica Kresl near the right side of the six-yard box, shot it past the keeper and gave Western a 1-0 lead at the 3:24 mark.

Kresl would add to the Western lead 12:36 after Massey's goal. It would be the first of two goals for Kresl after she knocked home the Mountaineers' fourth goal in the 36th minute. Kresl's five points in the match is a new program record and her two goals ties for the most in school history.

Between Kresl's goals, Katie Desch scored her first of the season, unassisted in the 25th minute. Desch scored off a rebound, giving Western a 3-0 advantage.

The Mountaineers would score six total goals in the first 45 minutes of play. Coming off the bench, Crista Lewis and Samantha Ginsberg each added first half goals. Lewis scored in the 40th minute, while Ginsberg made it 6-0, scoring just one minute later.

Sophie Fear scored the match's only goal in the second half. Fear pounced on a rebound in the 71st minute, and put the Mountaineers ahead 7-0.

Western outshot BHSU (0-6, 0-1 RMAC) 26-9. Western's 26 team shots ties for third most in a match for the Mountaineers.

Goalies Katie Simpson-Johnson and Emilie Eckhart combined for their second shutout in-a-row. Simpson-Johnson earned the win, making one save.

Western will continue the home stand next Friday when they host Colorado Mesa University at 3 p.m. on Gateway Field.
