GUNNISON – Western State Colorado University men's basketball freshman
Monroe Porter had an outstanding 17 rebounds in the team's 89-75 loss to CSU-Pueblo Friday evening. The team will take on New Mexico Highlands University tomorrow for the season finale at 7 p.m.
Â
Porter's performance was one for the record books. The last time a Mountaineers had more boards than Porter did was in 1991 when Steve Fendry had 19. Porter was one board short of tying the fifth-best performance in school history, with four of the top-five marks coming from the 1960s. What made the performance more spectacular was that eight of the rebounds came on the offensive end, leading to 13 second chance points. Porter also had six points and a team-high four assists.
Â
While Porter cleaned up,
Ben Beauchamp went off inside the paint tonight. For just the third time this season the junior did not hit a 3-pointer, but that didn't stop him from scoring 23 points and dishing out four assists. Beauchamp was joined by
Brady Subart with 13 points and
Will Duggan with 11.
Â
Rico Spikes and Nelson Kahler were the main forces for the Thunderwolves. Kahler had a game-high 25 points, as well as nearly having a double-double with eight blocks. Spikes had a double-double with 14 points and 12 boards.
